Cool Active is a mobile application for optimising air conditioning (AC) usage to fight climate change.

Their goal is to make data more visible and measurable to the users. I was tasked with creating a high fidelity concept design for the app that not only addressed the core functionality of optimizing AC usage but also made the process engaging and informative for the user.

Work flow

My design process began with understanding the users’ needs through surveys and interviews, leading to the development of personas that represent the app's diverse user base. From this foundation, I crafted wireframes that laid out the app’s structure, focusing on simplicity and ease of navigation to ensure that users of all technical abilities could benefit from the app’s features.

User flow

I carried out research and interviews to find out users’ pain points. Users mentioned that spending too much time to look for something in the app was frustrating, which I took into account when designing the app.

Wireframes

I spent one week reviewing requirements and wire framing. The wires needed to account for vital actions as well as displaying important information (ex. consumption overview, savings and impact, adding and removing device).

Final design

I designed the user interface with a clean, minimalistic aesthetic, utilizing a fun color palette that subtly echoes the app's environmental mission. Interactive elements, such as dynamic charts and graphs, were integrated to visualize AC usage data vividly, making it easy for users to monitor their consumption patterns and understand their impact on the environment.

A signature feature of my design was the personalized tips and recommendations section, which guides users on optimizing their AC settings for efficiency without compromising comfort. To increase user engagement and promote positive behavior, I incorporated a game-like system, rewarding users for achieving eco-friendly milestones.
